Recently (September 2026), news came from the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Perennial General Hospital Tianjin—China's first wholly foreign-owned tertiary general hospital: a team led by Professor Wan Feng, Foreign Academician of the French National Academy of Surgery and an internationally renowned cardiac surgeon, successfully performed off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) on a patient with complex coronary heart disease. This is the hospital's first CABG since its opening in February 2025, marking that this foreign-invested hospital has acquired the full capability to perform highly complex cardiac surgical procedures.

Complex Condition, Precision Surgery by the Team
According to the report, the patient who underwent surgery was a coronary heart disease patient with multi-vessel disease. Coronary angiography revealed severe stenosis in the left anterior descending artery (LAD), the left circumflex artery (LCX), and the right coronary artery (RCA). Medical therapy had proven ineffective, and the patient had clear indications for surgical revascularization.
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is an important surgical approach for the treatment of severe coronary heart disease, indicated for patients with multi-vessel disease, left main coronary artery disease, or those in whom percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) cannot achieve complete revascularization. The procedure constructs a "bypass" at the distal end of the stenotic or occluded coronary artery to re-establish myocardial blood supply, thereby improving myocardial ischemia, relieving angina, and reducing the risk of serious cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction.
Following a preoperative multidisciplinary team (MDT) evaluation, Academician Wan Feng's team decided to perform off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB)—completing the vascular anastomosis while the heart is beating, so as to minimize the systemic inflammatory response and the risk of neurologic complications associated with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).
The surgery was performed by Academician Wan Feng as the lead surgeon, with a multidisciplinary team comprising experts in cardiac surgery, anesthesiology, perfusion (cardiopulmonary bypass), and intensive care. Preoperatively, the medical team conducted a thorough assessment of the patient's coronary lesion characteristics, cardiac function, and underlying comorbidities, and formulated an individualized surgical plan. Intraoperatively, hemodynamics remained stable and graft anastomosis proceeded smoothly. Postoperatively, the patient was transferred to the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) for close monitoring and gradually recovered with the support of the multidisciplinary team.

Clear Advantages of the "Beating-Heart Bypass" Technique
Academician Wan Feng is a leading figure in China's cardiovascular surgery field, acclaimed within the profession as a "pioneer of minimally invasive beating-heart coronary artery bypass." The off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting he specializes in avoids the myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury caused by traditional cardiopulmonary bypass with an arrested heart, offering advantages such as less bleeding, faster recovery, and shorter hospital stays. It is particularly suitable for elderly patients, those with poor cardiac function, and those with multiple systemic comorbidities.
Since its inception, the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center at Perennial General Hospital Tianjin has been positioned as a "national team"-level platform. Its team brings together authoritative experts from top-tier tertiary hospitals in Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai, covering cardiology, cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, and cardiac critical care. It stands at the international forefront in off-pump bypass, minimally invasive small-incision bypass, mechanical circulatory support (artificial heart assist device) implantation, valvular heart disease, and great-vessel (aortic) disease diagnosis and treatment.
Rooted in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei Region, Serving Multilevel Needs
Perennial General Hospital Tianjin is located in Zhangjiawo Town, Xiqing District, Tianjin, adjacent to Tianjin South Railway Station. It is the flagship medical project invested and operated by Perennial Holdings in China. The Cardiothoracic and Vascular Disease Diagnosis and Treatment team at Perennial General Hospital Tianjin stated that, going forward, it will continue to leverage its international management system and multidisciplinary collaboration model to refine an integrated diagnosis and treatment system encompassing "interventional cardiology + surgical bypass + intensive care + rehabilitation management," providing coronary heart disease patients across the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region and surrounding areas with more standardized, safe, and efficient surgical treatment options.
